MISSION

To form partnerships with the people of Mason County to enable them to improve their lives and the community. To this partnership, this office will bring research- and experienced based knowledge that facilitates critical thinking and skills development. This mission is founded in the origins of land-grant universities with the philosophy of having in each state an institution of higher education relating to the educational needs of all the people within that state.

Extension students are a broad representation of the state. Extension's focus is on lifelong learning, beginning with youth and including young mothers, homemakers, child-care providers, farmers, landowners, laborers, community leaders, and others. Programs develop from identified needs, and are delivered by volunteers, county and state extension faculty and staff. Based on grass roots needs, learning partnerships engage students, their communities, government agencies, and educational institutions in a learning process that transcends boundaries and results in improved living for the student.

The West Virginia University Extension Service is a statewide educational organization, funded by national and state governments, and by county commissions and boards of education, that helps West Virginians put research-based knowledge to work. The Cooperative Extension Service operates as an extension of the Land Grant University in each State. In West Virginia this is West Virginia University. Extension agents are located in each county in West Virginia to help local people determine educational programs in which they are interested.
