Mason County Cemetery Survey ProjectA Mason County Cemetery Survey Project has been initiated to identify and record Mason County’s cemeteries regardless of size, type or physical characteristics. We need your input! If you have information about specific cemeteries in Mason County, please fill out the electronic survey form as best you can and submit it. Your help will be greatly appreciated. The Mason County Cemetery Survey Project aims to create a computerized database of the locations of all Mason County cemeteries. It will be used to aid those seeking their ancestry in Mason County. It is the intent of the group to publish the locations of all Mason County cemeteries in both book and electronic form, including maps, directions and historically related information. Purpose: Since cemeteries can be the earliest "vital records" of a county, they are extremely important to the genealogical researcher. Many times it is difficult for the researcher to locate the cemetery of their ancestor even when they know where they lived and sometimes even the name of the cemetery. The purpose of this project is to provide informed access to the locations of all Mason County cemeteries, public and private. Scope: The project will entail the identification of all cemeteries, past and present, in Mason County. Information on cemeteries is to be obtained in a variety of ways: submissions by people in the Mason County, checking the file cabinets and books at the local library, checking topographic maps and county maps, checking county and genealogical and cemetery web sites. This project is to identify where a cemetery or burial ground is, or was, located. It will include listings of who is buried in each cemetery. A series of five books entitled Mason County Cemetery Inscriptions Volumes I through V compiled by Violet Machir, will be the starting point of the cataloging of individuals buried in each cemetery. End Products: The Mason County Cemetery Committee with the assistance of the Americorps volunteers will create a computerized database of the locations of all Mason County cemeteries. It will also publish a book listing driving directions to all Mason County cemeteries and whether or not they have restricted or unrestricted access. Information on where one can find published records for that cemetery will be included when that information is known.
